Recovery after injury
Tom Weeden, professional TT Road Racer tells his story of his recent heavy crash, injuries sustained and recovery journey using our oxygen therapy service at our Centre.
“Unfortunately I had a particularly nasty crash at Isle of Man TT this year. After setting my best ever TT laptimes that day we went for a 5th and final lap of the day on the Aprilia 660 Supertwin machine. About 9 miles into the 37.73 mile course at about 100mph I glanced my right handlebar/right arm on a stone wall, which bent the handlebar and locked the throttle fully open. This sent me into an uncontrollable wheelie heading straight for another wall. There was no option but to jump off the back and hope for the best, I headed feet first into a barrier and to be honest am very lucky to be alive.

I suffered a dislocated compound fracture to my right ankle/tibia and fibular – the bones actually came out through my boot which wasn’t pleasant! Fractured left tibia and fibular. Fractured T12 vertebrae. Fractured 5th metacarpal and fractured ribs. Plus lots of scrapes and bruises.
After 2 surgeries and an extended tour of 3 different UK hospitals I’m now back home and well on my way to recovery. I’ve been using HBOT at both the Kent MS Therapy Centre in Canterbury and the centre in Swanley prior to that. I’ve used HBOT previously for a broken neck, back and collarbone and the proof really is in pudding. HBOT is used by a lot of us racers to get us back on our bikes quicker than medical professionals may like us to be. I cannot thank the Kent MS Therapy Centre enough for getting me in the chamber and helping speed my recovery up as much as possible.”
