Having Oxygen Therapy: What happens during a session?

Before you start your first Oxygen Therapy session, or ‘dive’, you’ll have a thorough briefing from the trained operator on duty. Oxygen Therapy is conducted within strict regulations and all operators are comprehensively trained in its use.

Smoking, matches and lighters are forbidden from the chamber. We also ask people not to make phone calls during a dive as it may stop other users being able to relax. Some tablet devices may have hard drives that are affected by the pressure so should be taken in at your own risk.

Once inside the oxygen chamber, you’ll sit on a comfortable chair for the duration. The doors have been specially adapted to allow easy access for those using wheelchairs with cambered wheels.

A mask goes over your face so you can breathe in pure oxygen during your session.

Oxygen Therapy is usually painless, and most people find it relaxing and comfortable. As the air pressure in the chamber is increased gradually, you might feel your ears pop as if you’re on an airplane. The operator will have shown you how to clear or ‘equalise’ your ears beforehand.

Although the chamber takes up to 10 people, some people report feeling claustrophobic inside.

You’ll be monitored throughout each session, which normally lasts for an hour and 20 minutes. We’ll also monitor your overall progress as your sessions continue.

How can I have Oxygen Therapy?

Anyone can refer themselves to have Oxygen Therapy with us.

On your first session booking, our Senior Oxygen Operator Carl, will ask you to come in 30 minutes early to the Kent Neuro Therapy Centre in Canterbury to talk you through all you need to know.

During the meeting he’ll ask you details of your condition or injury, plus any prescribed medication you’re taking.

How many treatments will I need?

You can book sessions individually and it is up to you how many sessions works best. Many of our members have weekly sessions, some more regularly, some less.

Oxygen Therapy is currently available on Mondays to Fridays from 8.30am-4.30pm and Saturdays 8am-1pm.

How much does it cost?

Sessions can be booked individually.

All money raised from Oxygen Therapy treatments goes towards the running costs of Kent Neuro Therapy Centre.
